This report pulls your sales data from Shopify to prepare a report on how long it takes for your customers to make their first 5 orders from your store. The data is grouped into four distinct groups, each representing the days between successive orders. They are:

  • Days between 1st and 2nd order.

  • Days between 2nd and 3rd order.

  • Days between 3rd and 4th order.

  • Days between 4th and 5th order.

As seen above, 43 customers made a second order taking an average of 19 days. However, the median time gap was 14 days, indicating that there is a subset of customers who took significantly longer than the average. The mode, representing the most common time gap, was 13 days, suggesting a cluster of customers making their second purchase around this timeframe.

  1. Customer Retention Strategy: Stores can identify customer segments that have longer gaps between repeat purchases by analyzing the time intervals between orders. For instance, if there is a group of customers who, on average, take 30 days between their first and second orders, the store can implement targeted email campaigns or loyalty programs to incentivize them to return sooner. You can then rerun this report for the same time period to review the performance of your remarketing campaigns. If you would want to get a list of users in this report, the Customer Segment Builder Hop can be utilized to create a segment of users within the specified time period and filter them based on the number of orders placed.

  2. Campaign Timing: This hop can inform decision-making concerning the timing between emails in email flows. Using the example above, it takes an average of 19 days before a customer makes a second order, email marketers can decide to send a promotional mail to one-time customers after 10-15 days because they typically make their next purchase between this period.

  3. Customer Retention Rate: To calculate and track the retention rate between each order group, divide the number of customers who make a subsequent purchase by the total number of customers in the previous group. In the example above, 86% of customers within the specified time period make a third purchase from the store. Of those customers, 81% also make a fourth purchase, but only 40% of these customers make a fifth purchase. It's important to note that benchmark retention rates vary by industry and should be taken into consideration when measuring performance.
